Hail Damage To Slate Roof

In this episode of the build show we made an ice cannon to simulate hail hitting a roof.
Hail damage to slate roof. If you ve recently installed one of our rubber roofs you won t have to worry about hail damage. As the sizes of the hail increases so does the potential for big damage. However there are a number of factors that could cause damage such as. On june 6 2018 hailstones the size of baseballs hit parts of north texas from carrollton to coppell to arlington with significant property damage.
As you can see many of these hail impacts punches holes right through the slate. In general slates can be perforated by objects either from inside or outside a roof. We shot ice at four roof samples. Vermont slate hail proofroofs are warrantied against any size hail for the first 20 years and another 30 years for a hail of two inch diameter or less.
Slate tiles may be punctured cracked or broken by hail. 30 year asphalt shingles 15 year. Original slate was poor quality the installation was a side lap single layer of slate and the size of the hailstones. The effect of that impact is to either break or puncture the slates and or dent metal flashings.
Smaller hail typically does little damage to slate. In most cases slate roof tiles are resistant to hail damage and other impact damage. As shown in this photo a combination of a larger hail and an approximately 100 year old slate roof sustained significant damage as a result. Any of these conditions could be deemed functional damage if the damage is serious enough.
